Playing Pétanque in Austin, Texas

Welcome!

This site provides general information about where and when people play pétanque in and around Austin, Texas.

Pétanque originated in southern France and is now played worldwide. The goal is simple: throw your boules closer to a small target ball than your opponent. The game is easy to learn, social, and relaxed, and it’s well suited to a wide range of ages and abilities.

In Austin, pétanque is free, informal, and open to anyone who wants to play. It’s a pleasant way to get outside, enjoy some light exercise, and spend time with people you might not otherwise meet.

Don’t be shy — newcomers are always welcome. No one is concerned with how well you play. If you’re curious, the best way to learn is simply to show up and watch, or ask someone to explain a game. Extra balls (called boules) are always available for anyone who wants to try.

Locations and Times

You can check the schedules posted at the links below, but because seasons change and weather can be unpredictable, there is no truly fixed schedule for when or where games will take place. The most reliable way to know what’s happening on any given day is to follow one or both of the local pétanque Signal groups (see below).

That said, games are most often found at the following locations:

Browning Hangar - Located in the Mueller development, the Hangar is a popular and lively place to play pétanque. Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons tend to draw the most players.

French Légation Museum - Situated in downtown Austin, the beautiful French Legation Museum typically hosts games on Wednesday mornings. More information is here: Legation Boules Club.

Nelson Ranch Park - Located in Cedar Park, the Nelson Ranch Park is a great place to play, you can find information on playing times here: Nelson Ranch Pétanque Club.
